Last week Horserider.com reported on a story that saw a Miami nightclub (Mokai Lounge) let someone ride a horse into the venue, resulting in an investigation. Now it’s been confirmed that the city has revoked the club’s license.
The story made international news as cell phone footage made its way across all social networks showing a woman in a bikini riding into a nightclub on a horse. The horse was obviously frightened and at one point appears to fall onto the dancefloor. There was shock and outrage on social media.
Later a petition was launched requesting for the venue to be shut down. Then on Friday, City Manager Jimmy Morales revoked Mokai’s business license, providing sufficient evidence by citing the city’s animal cruelty laws and calling the incident a threat to public safety, according to the Miami Herald.
Morales commented that he was extremely surprised someone actually let the horse into a nightclub: “I was disgusted and offended that any legitimate businessperson would think this was an appropriate action to take. This activity was not permitted, and as soon as we became aware, I immediately instructed staff to act swiftly in remedying this situation.”
Mayor Dan Gelber supported the decision to revoke the license as well.
Local authorities released a statement when they found the animal: “Miami Dade PD’s animal experts have located the horse that was at Mokai. The horse has been inspected and deemed to be healthy and safe.”
